The soundtrack to a prairie dogs brain on a nice clear day, before the hawks start circling. I tried for a long time to get good shots of prairie dogs, frankly I don’t think it’s possible for me to do so. They are sentient rocks, I have a hard time accepting them as real animals ❤️😂

Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) hanging in some low bows.

Liked the wide frame and the close in on this one. Also enjoyed the noise, feels like this shot tells you that the jungle was dark.

This little pug-faced dude is the Ridge-Nosed Salamander, the (unfortunately) only Bolitoglossa we got out of the recent Costa Rica trip. Really interesting build on these guys, to me they almost look like someone tried to shove an ambystoma into a batrachoseps skin.

Everyone needs their mom, I guess. Little baby Mantled Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata) photographed from knee deep in the Caribbean, one of my favorite setups ever:)

Monkeys are so much fun to photograph, though I’ll say they usually don’t give you this nice of a shot. This was a cool one.

Pygmy is certainly fitting, these little owls aren’t much more than 8 inches from crown to tail tip. One of my favorite finds of this past year, if not my actual favorite.

Recolor and reframe of one of my favorite shots from Costa Rica. This relatively large eyelash viper was just gorgeous, and in my original design I over blew the yellows, which really numbed out the lovely white in this guys pattern. Wanted to redo that and fix it.

One of the reasons I really love insects and herps, is there is so much more to learn. Macrofauna is generally much better studied, the science has much less left to desire (though, of course, it’s often ignored regardless.)

Microfauna, like what’s pictured, tends to have much less information available. In many of the small species I photograph, I can’t find nearly as much information as I’d be able to find off a quick search for the larger mammals and birds. Part of that is research interest, and part is research ability, and part is the simple mass of species when you get down to this size range. Arthropoda in the US is represented by roughly 100,000 species, with estimates peaking to 173,000 when adding in undescribed (info from Smithsonian.) Contradict that with the roughly 7,000 species of mammal on earth, and it’s easy to see why mammals are so much better studied.

Note here that I used a Phyla (Arthropoda) vs a Class (Mammalia) here to try and illustrate the sheer lack of comparative diversity in general Macrofauna without including reptiles and other classes that fall more into the size range I’m discussing. I could have used Chordata, but I didn’t feel that was a good way to explain this particular topic.

My 2025-so far in 2026 has been pretty damn incredible, hard to believe I started doing this with a little Olympus T-1 and no experience almost a decade ago. Little nerd me would be very proud of big nerd me. I hope you all are enjoying what I’ve been putting out recently, if you have suggestions, or just wildlife talking points you want to chat about, always down! Looking forward to 2026 being even better, hopefully with another few trips out of the US, but coming sooner Yellowstone, Glacier, and Teton loops. Gotta get my snow shots, I love them.

Glass frogs! Hard not to love them in all forms and facets, they’re just a little bit goofy. Nothing like a critter with eyes the same mass as the rest of its body (see the Imantodes sp posted earlier this week for more proof of this)

Probably the thing I wanted to see most, and they certainly turned out. I love my big snakes, geckos, weird mammals, I do, but frogs are just a different kind of fun to photograph. Utterly goofy.

I swear I am almost done with the photos of this species (I’m not, expect many more. Haven’t even broken 25% of what I took in Costa Rica, and 0% of the video aside from what I edited in country.) The largest B. nigroadspersus, found at the end of the night by the talented @ecologybyanderson

A beautiful specimen that was more than willing to pose nicely, one of the fun attributes of the species is their posing is naturally very visually pleasing. Makes them very fun to photograph.
